Coup Allegations Hits Ghana Armed Forces Camp

2024-08-24  James

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have firmly denied allegations that they threatened to take control of the country if the upcoming 2024 elections turn violent. These claims were reportedly attributed to Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG).

In a press release issued on Friday, August 23, 2024, GAF clarified that they have never held any press conference or made any statements suggesting an intention to stage a coup. The statement underscored that GAF’s role is to support the Ghana Police Service when requested, emphasizing that this support does not imply an overthrow of the government.

Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, stated, “GAF has no intention to stage a coup and will prevent and resist any individual, group, or organization seeking to unlawfully take over the power of government, either acting alone or in collaboration with any security agency.”

The release also urged civil society groups and the media to avoid using GAF’s name to heighten political tensions and called for cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and safe environment for the upcoming December 2024 elections. GAF reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and tranquility, encouraging citizens to freely and safely carry out their lawful activities.
