Denzel Washington, one of Hollywood's most iconic and celebrated actors, recently shared exciting news about his future projects — and hinted at his looming retirement.
In a candid interview on Australia’s “Today” show, Washington opened up about his career trajectory and what fans can expect from him in the coming years.
At 69 years old, the Oscar-winning actor revealed that he’s being more selective with his roles, focusing on working with top-tier filmmakers. “I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make,” Washington confessed. “Probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done.”
Though Washington remains at the height of his career, he’s preparing for a transition into a more limited number of roles as he nears the end of his acting journey. Fans will be thrilled to know that he’s already signed on for some major projects that promise to leave a lasting mark on his legacy.
Washington’s next move includes a return to Broadway, where he will star in a highly anticipated run of Shakespeare’s Othello. He’ll take on the iconic role of the tragic Moor of Venice — a part he first played at the young age of 22. The role marks a significant moment in his career, showcasing his immense range and continued passion for classic theater.
Looking further ahead, Washington shared that he will also be taking on the role of Hannibal, and has been in talks with acclaimed director Steve McQueen about a film project. But perhaps the most surprising announcement came when he revealed his upcoming appearance in Marvel’s Black Panther 3.
Washington confirmed that Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is writing a role for him in the third installment of the blockbuster franchise.
While Marvel has yet to officially confirm the development of Black Panther 3, Washington’s involvement in the project is bound to generate major excitement among fans. Given his immense talent and presence, his role is sure to be a standout in the highly anticipated sequel.
Washington’s future projects don’t stop there. He’s also set to star in an adaptation of King Lear, further cementing his status as one of the greatest actors of his generation. However, after these ambitious roles, Washington plans to retire from acting.
“I’m going to retire after that,” he said, signaling that the next few years will be his final chapter in Hollywood. Though it’s a bittersweet thought for fans, Washington’s legacy is already firmly etched in film history.
His decision to step away from acting after such a storied career is a reflection of his desire to leave on his own terms, while continuing to take on roles that challenge him creatively.
