Diddy Accused of Contacting Witnesses from Prison in Sex Trafficking Case

2024-11-19  McLord Selasi Azalekor

Sean "Diddy" Combs is facing new allegations as he awaits trial for sex trafficking, with prosecutors claiming that the music mogul has violated prison rules by contacting potential witnesses in his case.

The 55-year-old, currently held in Manhattan, is accused of using inmates' phone accounts to make calls, including three-way calls to individuals not on his approved contact list, in a bid to influence testimony.

In a court filing, prosecutors allege that Diddy made "relentless efforts" to sway witness testimony by orchestrating communication with people linked to the case. The review of recorded calls revealed that the music mogul instructed his family members to contact potential witnesses, a breach of prison protocol.

Diddy’s legal team maintains that he is innocent of all charges and has pleaded not guilty to the accusations, including the sex trafficking and racketeering charges in the federal indictment against him.

Prosecutors have pointed to multiple instances where Diddy seemingly attempted to manipulate public perception and the jury pool in his case. One such effort includes an Instagram post by a woman known only as "witness two," who issued a statement countering accusations made by singer Dawn Richard in a civil lawsuit.

Prosecutors allege that the post was drafted with input from Diddy, following numerous texts and calls from prison. There are also allegations that Diddy financially compensated "witness two" for her statement, although this has not been confirmed.

In addition, a video posted by Diddy’s seven children on November 5 was cited by prosecutors as part of his public relations strategy to influence potential jurors. The video, which was shared widely across media outlets, showed the family celebrating Diddy’s birthday while he was in custody.

Prosecutors claim that Diddy closely monitored the video’s audience engagement, discussing with his family how to use it to sway public opinion in his favor.

The musician has been accused of using the phone accounts of other inmates to bypass prison regulations, which prohibit such behavior. Prosecutors argue that this is part of a "relentless" scheme to contact witnesses, including victims of his alleged abuse, to interfere with the legal process.

His legal team recently submitted a request for bail, proposing a $50 million package with 24/7 security and house arrest. They argued that Diddy’s ability to prepare for trial is severely compromised by the conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center, including frequent lockdowns and restrictions on note-taking.

However, prosecutors have rejected the bid for bail, citing the risks of witness tampering and obstruction of justice. They argue that no set of conditions could prevent Diddy from continuing his influence over witnesses and the trial process, citing his "uncanny ability" to manipulate those around him, from employees to family members and even fellow inmates.

Diddy’s legal troubles began in November 2023 when his ex-partner, Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura, filed a civil lawsuit accusing him of rape and physical assault. Though the case was settled quickly, it led to multiple other accusations and a federal investigation.

In March 2024, federal agents raided his properties, and in September 2024, Diddy was arrested on charges related to sex trafficking, which include allegations of drug-fueled "Freak Offs," where women were allegedly coerced into engaging in sexual acts over extended periods.

In addition to these charges, Diddy faces over two dozen civil suits from men and women accusing him of sexual assault, rape, and exploitation. He has denied all allegations, maintaining that the sexual encounters at the heart of the criminal case were consensual.

In a separate legal development, a lawsuit has been filed against Tony Buzbee, a prominent Texas attorney who has represented numerous individuals in lawsuits against Diddy. The lawsuit, filed by an unnamed "high-profile individual," alleges that

Buzbee attempted to extort him by threatening to make false sexual assault allegations public unless certain demands were met. Buzbee denies these claims, calling the lawsuit a "last-ditch attempt" to silence him.
