Ghana Introduces New Levies and VAT Changes Under Mahama Administration Affecting AWS Services

Ghana VAT Changes Under John Mahama's Administration

The Ghana Government under the leadership of President John Mahama has introduced additional levies affecting various services, including those provided by Amazon Web Services EMEA Sarl (“AWS EMEA”). The new levies and VAT adjustments are as follows:

  1. National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL),
  2. Ghana Education Trust Fund Levy (GETFund Levy), and
  3. Covid-19 Health Recovery Levy: These three levies collectively amount to 6%.

Additionally, a local Value Added Tax (VAT) of 15% will be applied to all sales of AWS EMEA services to customers in Ghana. As a result of these changes, starting from 1 March 2025, AWS EMEA will be issuing VAT invoices to AWS accounts located in Ghana for charges incurred from that date.

These changes aim to generate additional revenue for health, education, and COVID-19 recovery initiatives in Ghana. Businesses and consumers should take note of these new charges as they will impact the cost of AWS services.
