Seven Journalist Attacks Recorded Under Mahama’s Administration – GJA President

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kwabena Dwumfour, has strongly criticized the Mahama administration over the increasing incidents of attacks on journalists.

Dwumfour highlighted that seven attacks have been recorded since President John Dramani Mahama took office, describing the situation as “unprecedented”.

Addressing this case in a post by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, the citizens have highlighted some key points that the Ghana Journalists Association and the president should take into consideration and resolve their concerns.

Citizens' Concerns Needing Address by the Ghana Journalists Association
  • Defining Journalism: There were calls for the GJA to clearly define who qualifies as a journalist to prevent misuse of the title.
  • Regulatory Status: Citizens urged the GJA to address its own regulatory status and working conditions to maintain credibility.
  • Political Neutrality: Concerns were raised about media houses' political affiliations and the need for impartial reporting.
  • Government Accountability: There were appeals for the government and law enforcement agencies to take swift action to safeguard press freedom and ensure justice for affected journalists.
  • Police Escort for Journalists: Some citizens suggested that every journalist should have a police escort for their safety.

Conclusion:

The GJA and citizens alike emphasize the importance of addressing these issues to ensure a safe and credible journalistic environment in Ghana.
