President-elect John Dramani Mahama met with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, who conveyed a congratulatory message from Chinese President Xi Jinping. This meeting highlighted the long-standing cooperation between Ghana and China, dating back to the era of Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
During the discussion, Mahama acknowledged the significant role of Sino-Hydro in financing various projects in Ghana. However, he also pointed out that Ghana's debt default has negatively impacted the country's credit rating. To address this, Mahama emphasized the need to stabilize the currency, restore the economy, boost economic growth, and reduce inflation.
Mahama stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships with countries like China. He mentioned that once the transition is complete, his administration plans to engage China on technical cooperation issues. This includes exploring how Ghana can continue to benefit from the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) disbursements and the Belt and Road Initiative.
