Two Democratic lawmakers, Senator Ed Markey and Representative Ted Lieu, are urging President Joe Biden to limit the president's authority to use nuclear weapons before Donald Trump takes office.
Currently, the U.S. president has sole authority to authorize the use of nuclear weapons. Markey and Lieu want to change this policy to require congressional approval before any nuclear weapons can be used, except in cases where the U.S. has already been attacked with nuclear weapons.
They argue that this change is necessary to prevent any single individual from having the power to start a nuclear war, ensuring that Congress's constitutional role is respected and fulfilled. This move is seen as particularly urgent with Trump's return to the Oval Office, given his past statements and actions regarding nuclear weapons.
