NASA Raises Risk Assessment of Asteroid 2024 YR4 Impact in 2032 to 3.1%

NASA has recently updated the risk assessment for asteroid 2024 YR4, increasing the probability of an Earth impact in 2032 to 3.1%, up from 2.3% just two weeks ago. This revised risk percentage represents the highest risk level ever assigned to an asteroid, reflecting the latest observational data and trajectory analysis.

Asteroid 2024 YR4, estimated to be between 130 and 300 feet wide, poses a significant threat due to its potential for localized damage upon impact. The regions identified as potentially affected include areas spanning from northern South America, across the Pacific Ocean, to southern Asia, the Arabian Sea, and Africa. In Africa, countries such as Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Niger could be at risk.

While the increased risk is notable, it is important to remember that there remains a 96.9% probability that the asteroid will not collide with Earth.

NASA, along with other international space agencies, continues to monitor the asteroid's trajectory closely and will refine predictions as more data becomes available.

Increased Asteroid Impact Risk in 2032
The scientific community remains vigilant, emphasizing the importance of ongoing observations and preparedness in addressing potential asteroid threats.
