OpenAI has rolled out a powerful upgrade to ChatGPT: real-time web search. Now, ChatGPT can deliver accurate, timely answers with links to relevant web sources, helping users find information without needing a traditional search engine.
By merging conversational AI with up-to-date web data, ChatGPT provides instant updates on sports, news, stocks, weather, and more, offering a smarter way to explore the web.
Users can rely on ChatGPT to decide when to search or choose the web search option manually by clicking the search icon. This new feature is available on chatgpt.com and in ChatGPT’s desktop and mobile apps.
Searching the web can often be time-consuming, involving multiple searches and sorting through numerous links to find trusted information. ChatGPT aims to simplify this process by delivering concise, conversational responses that pull in accurate information from the web.
With the ability to ask follow-up questions and receive responses that consider the full context of previous queries, ChatGPT’s search feature aims to bring users closer to better answers.
OpenAI has partnered with top news and data providers, ensuring access to updated information across several categories, including Weather, Stocks, Sports, News, and Maps.
Additionally, ChatGPT now includes clickable links to web sources, such as news articles and blog posts, for users who want to dive deeper. By selecting the “Sources” button, users can access a sidebar with direct links to original content, ensuring transparency and ease of access to high-quality information.
This development has been positively received by media leaders. Pam Wasserstein, President of Vox Media, highlights the benefits, saying, “ChatGPT search promises to better highlight and attribute information from trustworthy news sources, benefiting audiences while expanding the reach of publishers like ourselves who produce premium journalism.”
Similarly, Louis Dreyfus, CEO & Publisher of Le Monde, sees ChatGPT search as a milestone for the future of information access: “Partnering with OpenAI positions Le Monde at the forefront of this shift, allowing us to test innovations at an early stage while safeguarding journalism’s core values and integrity.”
The ChatGPT search feature leverages an advanced version of GPT-4, finely tuned through a new synthetic data generation technique. It combines data from third-party search providers with content from partner publishers, resulting in fast and accurate responses.
OpenAI plans to keep refining ChatGPT search, with future enhancements focused on shopping, travel, and the integration of OpenAI’s advanced reasoning capabilities for more in-depth research. This improved search will soon extend to Advanced Voice, and canvas features, and even be available to free and guest users.
Starting 31st October 2024, ChatGPT Plus and Team users can experience the new search capabilities on chatgpt.com.
Currently, ChatGPT Plus and Team users, along with those on the SearchGPT waitlist, can access web searches. Enterprise and educational users will gain access soon, and it will roll out to all free users over the coming months.
