Selena Gomez is still pinching herself after her idol-turned-friend Meryl Streep hosted a screening and Q&A for Gomez’s new Netflix film, Emilia Pérez.
The event, held on Wednesday, Nov. 20, was a star-studded celebration of Gomez's Oscar-worthy performance and a testament to her growing acclaim in Hollywood.
The screening, hosted by actress Colleen Camp, brought together a glittering array of stars, including Martin Short, Annette Bening, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph. But the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly Meryl Streep, who praised Gomez’s work with heartfelt enthusiasm.
“It was beautiful. It was just a beautiful, smudged, sensual, incredible performance,” Streep reportedly said during the Q&A, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
For Gomez, 32, the moment was a dream come true. Taking to Instagram after the event, she shared her gratitude, writing:
"Thank you SO much Colleen Camp for hosting and to my friend Meryl for celebrating @emiliaperezfilm — not me casually saying my friend Meryl. It’s Meryl Streep!! My idol, dream."
During the discussion, Gomez shared a behind-the-scenes revelation about landing her role in Emilia Pérez. Despite months of uncertainty, she later learned from director Jacques Audiard that the part was hers all along.
“Apparently, I had the part; I just didn’t know that I did,” Gomez recalled with a laugh. “I spent nine months in hell waiting to know if I got in this movie.”
Her vulnerability and determination to push through doubt resonated with the audience, further solidifying her reputation as both a relatable and resilient performer.
Gomez and Streep first connected while working on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, where they developed a genuine camaraderie. Gomez has been open about the awe she felt sharing the screen with the three-time Oscar winner.
Reflecting on their time on set, Gomez recently said, “I’ll never forget her being barefoot, singing on set, just loving what she’s doing. I want that spirit. I want to always love what I do and be there for people.”
Gomez’s performance in Emilia Pérez has sparked serious awards season chatter, and with an endorsement from none other than Meryl Streep, the buzz is only intensifying.
