Trump Hints at New Trade Deal with China Despite Rising Tariffs

2025-02-21  Ejaz Younas

President Donald Trump recently suggested that a new trade deal with China is still "possible"  despite ongoing trade disputes. Trump previously hailed the 2020 US-China trade agreement as a major win but now he sees potential for more deals. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he left the door open for further negotiations even as tensions between the two countries remain high.

Trump acknowledged the difficulties in the trade relationship but expressed confidence that with the right approach an agreement could be reached. China’s foreign ministry quickly responded emphasizing that both sides need to handle their trade issues with "mutual respect".

They called for open and fair discussions between the US and China to work out a resolution warning against escalating tensions through more tariffs and confrontational actions. Both nations understand that a prolonged trade dispute could harm their economies. So finding common ground has become increasingly urgent for global stability.

Trump's Tariff Policies Affecting Both Allies and Adversaries

As he begins his second term, Trump has rolled out sweeping tariffs targeting both adversaries like China and US allies such as Canada, Mexico and the European Union. These tariffs have become his main tool for tackling the US trade deficit. Just this February, he introduced a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports ramping up the pressure on their economic relationship.

Trump has argued that these tariffs will encourage domestic manufacturing and lower the trade imbalance. The global reaction has been mixed as these tariffs play a key role in Trump’s strategy. Critics argue that these measures could harm international trade that is affecting both US allies and adversaries.

The growing concern is that such actions might not only disrupt global supply chains but could also hurt the US economy in the long run. Additionally, many businesses in the US have raised concerns that higher tariffs could lead to increased costs for consumers and producers alike.

China Calls for Dialogue to Settle Trade Disputes with US

China’s foreign ministry has urged both countries to address their trade disagreements through "dialogue and consultation"  based on equality and respect in response to Trump’s increased tariffs. They emphasized that trade wars only hurt global prosperity and both sides should look for peaceful solutions rather than escalating conflicts.

Beijing believes that a cooperative approach where both parties benefits is essential for long term economic stability. China’s commerce ministry also weighed in urging the US to reconsider its approach and stop using tariffs as a coercive tool. Beijing advocates for a balanced approach that prioritizes negotiation and cooperation over confrontation.

They believe that resolving these trade disputes through dialogue is the best way forward for both countries and the global economy. This call for dialogue also reflects China’s concern over the broader impact that trade tensions could have on other nations particularly developing economies.
