UTAG Calls for Nationwide Ban on Destructive Mining - Galamsey
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has announced an indefinite strike to demand a complete ban on Galamsey, the harmful mining practices in Ghana's forests, farmlands, and waterways. The decision comes after a successful vote by UTAG members, with a strong majority supporting the ban, YES; 2.153 votes (7795%).
In a statement, UTAG expressed deep concern about the negative impact of unregulated mining on the environment and the livelihoods of Ghanaians. The organization highlighted the need to protect vital ecosystems and prevent further damage to the country's natural resources.
UTAG's strike is part of a growing movement calling for stricter government action against illegal mining, which has devastated many parts of Ghana. The organization hopes that its action will pressure the government to take decisive steps to address this pressing environmental and social issue.
