Visa Ghana Pushes For Contactless Payment Adoption

2024-11-13  Michael Sackey

Visa Ghana is increasing efforts to promote contactless payments through a one-day industry workshop titled “Securing the Future of Payments through Acceptance.”

The event aimed to raise awareness and tackle challenges in Ghana’s digital payment ecosystem. The workshop brought together key sector players to discuss enhancing financial inclusion with contactless technology, improving payment security, and boosting adoption rates.

Visa Ghana’s Country Director, Fabrice Konan, pointed out that while contactless payments are popular globally, Ghana lags behind with only about 10% of transactions being contactless, compared to nearly 60% in markets like South Africa and Mauritius. He attributed the slow adoption to entrenched consumer habits.

“Ghanaians embrace contactless payments abroad, yet domestically, they still prefer traditional card payments or mobile money,” he said.

Mr. Konan further emphasized the benefits of contactless payments, including speed, security, and convenience, urging for a collective effort from banks, merchants, and stakeholders to accelerate adoption.

Visa Ghana also provided insights into contactless payment technologies and updated attendees on its "Risk and Compliance Programs" to enhance security.

Despite the current challenges, Konan expressed optimism about the future. “With the right strategies and collaboration, we believe contactless payments will drive greater convenience and performance in Ghana,” he stated.

Visa’s initiative is part of its broader goal to foster a cashless society in Ghana.
